Start out as a self-employed autónomo in Spain.
- Registration with the tax office and social security
- Quarterly tax returns without stress
- Invoicing according to Spanish rules
What is an autónomo?
Autónomo is the Spanish form of self-employment for individuals – comparable to being a sole trader in the UK. You are personally liable, but setting up is quick and easy.
As an autónomo you register with the tax office (Agencia Tributaria) and social security (Seguridad Social). You then pay a monthly social security contribution and file quarterly VAT and income tax prepayments.
What you need to get started:
- A NIE number
- A Spanish bank account
- A digital certificate
- Registration on the municipal register (empadronamiento) if you live in Spain
