What is the digital certificate?

The digital certificate (certificado digital) is your electronic ID for Spanish authorities – similar to a GOV.UK One Login. You use it to identify yourself online and sign documents electronically with legal validity.

Wherever you see the Cl@ve logo, you can also log in with your digital certificate.

You can use it, for example, for:

Social security matters
Applications at the town hall

Your certificate in three steps

Requirements: a NIE number and a valid passport or ID card. No NIE yet?

You enter your details and NIE online and pay securely.

Via a link you take a live selfie and scan your ID – automatically and within minutes.

You receive your certificate as a .p12 file with step-by-step instructions for your browser.

Digital certificate FAQ

Yes. Your NIE is the basis of the certificate. If you don't have one yet, we'll gladly apply for it first.

Usually two years from issue. We remind you in good time to renew it.

Yes. The certificate is issued by a qualified trust service provider and can be used in the same way under the eIDAS regulation.

Cl@ve is a login method with a PIN via SMS or app that you need to register for. The digital certificate is an electronic identity in your browser that lets you log in and also sign documents with legal validity. Many procedures accept both; some require the certificate.

You can install the .p12 file on several computers and browsers. Keep the file and your password safe.
