Passport from outside the EU

NIE number for non-EU citizens

  • The same NIE number as for an EU passport.
  • Not a visa and not a residence permit.
  • The TIE card is a later step, in person in Spain.

The NIE is the identification number for foreigners. It does not depend on whether the passport is from the EU.

We also file the application for non-EU citizens by power of attorney when there is a concrete reason, such as a purchase, a bank account, a company or an inheritance. The NIE does not allow a stay of more than 90 days and it does not allow work. Visa and residence permits are handled by the consulate or the extranjería. We do not file those applications.

What the number is, and what it is not

  • A concrete reason

A purchase, a bank account, a company or an inheritance. That is the NIE application we file.

  • No right to stay

Staying in Spain for more than 90 days is a matter for the consulate, not for this number.

  • No TIE

We do not issue the plastic card that requires fingerprints.

  • Children

A parent or guardian files the application, as with an EU passport.

How it works

You answer a few questions about yourself online. It takes about 5 minutes – we use your answers to prepare all Spanish forms for you.

You receive a ready-made bilingual power of attorney. You sign it at a notary and have it apostilled – or conveniently online via video call with our partner notarity.

We book the appointment with the Policía Nacional, submit all documents and keep you updated by e-mail.

You receive your official NIE certificate as a PDF with a CSV verification code – and the original by post if you wish. Done!
